Jennifer Lopez might be taking a page out of the book well-studied by Britney Spears, Drew Barrymore, and more recently J.Lo’s very own step daughter Violet Affleck. On Wednesday, “Page Six” published paparazzi photos taken of the 54-year-old as she walked around the streets of New York in a white crop top that read “JLO BE MY MAMA.” Of course, if this was any regular day, I’m sure the tabloids would allow the singer to wear her crop top in peace. But alas, rumors of a marital storm are raging around Lopez and her Y2K lover Ben Affleck, so the outlet is now claiming that said crop top is “send[ing] a message.” Naturally, they didn’t go as far as to tell us what that message was. Darn!
“Page Six” did note, however, that Lopez had paired her cryptic tee with a pair of $620 Acne Studios jeans and a $5,200 Dioriviera Lady Dior Bag. Very cool, but not helpful. If I had to guess, I’d assume she might be crying out to the queer community, hoping that they might claim her as “mother” during a time where she could really use the support and good will of new fans.
As you’ll recall, earlier this week, the gossip rag reported that Lopez and Affleck’s marriage had actually been over “for months” — apparently since March, according to unnamed sources. Or, perhaps J.Lo is using the crop top to telegraph what it was like to be married to Ben again. Maybe he suffered from Peter Pan syndrome and dating him felt more like mothering (unfortunately, not an uncommon experience for American wives). My third, final, and most probably theory: Maybe she just likes crop tops, as she told the Today show earlier this year, and wants to feel hot. If I had her abs, I’d be wearing crop tops all over New York City, too. You do you, J.Lo!
