Lord Alan Sugar has only changed “two or three nappies” and missed the birth of his eldest son.

Alan and Ann Simons got married in April 1968 in Great Portland Street Synagogue, London, before honeymooning in Majorca for two weeks. Speaking about his non-romantic proposal, Alan said in his memoir, What You Get: “It was more along the lines of, ‘I suppose we should get married then?’ There was certainly no going down on one knee, with a rose, in a restaurant. In fact we were going over the Stratford flyover in the minivan at the time.”

Ann worked as a hairdresser and was 16 when she met Alan, who was 18. They have three children together, Simon, Daniel and Louise. He also has grandchildren – Simon’s sons, Nathan, born in 1993, and Matt born in 1995, Nathan’s sons, Alex and Jack, who were born in 2000 and 2003 respectively while Louise has a daughter called Fay and a son named Joseph.

Speaking on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, Alan admitted he has only ever changed a handful of nappies and missed the birth of his eldest son. Lord Sugar said: “I was not at the birth of Simon, the eldest.

“I was playing tennis. And I must admit I was not the modern day father.” When asked how many nappies he had changed, he answered: “Maybe two or three. But by the time we were onto the third [child] not even Ann changed the nappies. We had help.”

Lord Sugar admitted he regretted the amount of time he spent at work “compared to the modern father” when his children were growing up. He said: “I was out working and I wouldn’t get home until eight o’clock at night. The thing is that we are very normal people. We kept the children grounded and that’s why they are normal people. That’s an achievement. That’s bigger than making the hundreds of millions or whatever you want to talk about.”

All three of Lord Sugar’s children have followed in their father’s footsteps and work in the field of business. In 2007, Simon Sugar became the CEO of Amscreen, a technology company that is also a subsidiary of the Amshold Group – Lord Sugar’s private holding company, which is responsible for all of his private companies and companies formed in partnership with Lord Sugar as a result of The Apprentice.

Daniel manages Amsprop, the property investment and development arm of Amshold Group. Louise, Lord Sugar and Ann’s only daughter can hold her own in the world of business and has been on the board of directors of several companies, most of which are linked to her family.
