ITV I’m A Celebrity’s Sam Thompson has opened up about the “strain” of his relationship with Zara McDermott ahead of the show.
The 31-year-old is currently in Australia ahead of his stint in the jungle but conflicting schedules have meant he and his girlfriend didn’t get to spend much time together beforehand. Zara finished her time on Strictly Come Dancing just weeks ago, with Sam jetting to Oz not long after.
This means the pair now have to spend another month apart. They have had overlapping schedules since Zara started her training for Strictly in August until she was eliminated from the popular dance show.
Talking about spending time apart, The Sun reported that Sam said: “Obviously it is a strain for anyone’s heartstrings. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t going to miss my girlfriend so much. I already do miss her. But having said that, what an amazing experience.”

He added: “The thing is, there was a potential for them overlapping. But as I said, what a wonderful problem to have. I can’t speak to Zara, but I know she thinks the same thing. I can’t believe that we even had two rival shows.”
Zara danced alongside Strictly pro Graziano Di Prima while she was on the show but the pair were the fifth couple to be eliminated and went home during Halloween week. the duo lost the dreaded dance-off against soap star Adam Thomas and his pro partner Luba Mushtuk.

Sam supported his girlfriend while she was on the dancing show as he was often seen in the audience watching her live performances. This comes as Sam said he has hoped he will come out of the jungle “a man”. He said he is hoping to learn new skills I’m A Celebrity experience.
He is no stranger to reality TV, finding fame on Made In Chelsea, but he knows that this is going to be different to what he’s used to. He said: “Going in a boy and coming out a man? I absolutely love that idea. That is awesome. Is anyone going to let me cook in there? I doubt it. But of course I hope to learn new skills.
“I’m very happy to be a cog in the machine. Wherever someone doesn’t want to do, I’ll do it. So yeah, I’m very excited to do things that I need to do. I’m a people pleaser. I’ve got the backbone of a fish.”
I’m A Celebrity is due to return this weekend, with Ant and Dec returning to host the show as usual. Sam will be going up against a whole host of new celebs such as politician Nigel Farage, YouTuber Nella Rose, This Morning presenter Josie Gibson, actress Danielle Harold, actor Nick Pickard, celebrity chef Grace Dent, actress Jamie Lynn Spears and JLS’ Marvin Humes.
