Matty Healy just revealed that he would rather not write songs about past relationships anymore – which would include his ex, Taylor Swift.
Healy, 35, recently appeared on the Tuesday, October 22, episode of Joshua Citarella’s Doomscroll podcast, and during their conversation, the 1975 frontman’s feelings toward writing music about former loves came up.
“Last year I became a way more well-known public figure for loads of different reasons,” Healy, 32, said. “I would kind of just be lying if I made a record about, I don’t know, all the stuff that was said about me or my casual romantic liaisons or whatever it may be that I’ve kind of become known for, just because I was famous,” he told the host. “I think that that’s an obvious thing to draw from. And I’m just not interested in it,” he continued, seemingly mentioning his brief fling with Swift, 34, which went from May to June 2023.
The U.K. native went on to explain, “I think that that’s an obvious thing to draw from. And I’m just not interested in it. And I think, like, the maintenance of the status quo is something that I always fight against.” He later added, “So the idea of making a record about something that personally happened to me, that by the time I put it out is gonna be like two years old, I see people doing that as well, and it’s not interesting.”
Unlike Healy, Swift has no problem taking inspiration from her past beaus. The singer has a long track record of writing music about them – her latest album being no exception. The Tortured Poets Department has numerous songs that seemingly refer to her short-lived relationship with the rock star, including “loml,” in which she describes a rekindled relationship that comes to an end.
In the song, Swift sings, “It was legendary / It was momentary / It was unnecessary / Should’ve let it stay buried / Oh what a valiant roar / What a bland goodbye / The coward claimed he was a lion / I’m combing through the braids of lies / ‘I’ll never leave’ / ‘Nevermind.'”
After Swift and Healy split in June 2023, he confirmed a relationship with model Gabriette Bechtel in September of the same year. The two announced their engagement via an Instagram story on Bechtel’s account in June 2024. Meanwhile, Swift sparked up a relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end, Travis Kelce, in August 2023 after her breakup with Healy, and the couple has been going strong since.
