Katie Holmes is about to be an empty nester.
The 45-year-old actress and director spoke about daughter Suri Cruise heading off to college in an interview with Town & Country published on Tuesday, August 13. She admitted she will miss the “close proximity” to her daughter, who recently revealed she will be attending Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
“I’m really proud of my daughter… I’m happy,” Holmes said of the 18-year-old whom she shares with ex Tom Cruise. “I remember being this age, this time of beginnings. It’s exciting to learn about yourself, and I loved that time, so it makes me happy to think about it like that.”

Suri had revealed her college choice in a TikTok video shared by a fellow student at LaGuardia High School in New York City in June 2024. In the video, she showed off a big smile as she used her hands to highlight the name of the university on her sweatshirt.
In the Town & Country profile, Holmes revealed some of the creative pursuits she has taken in preparation for the alone time she will have while Suri is away at school. In addition to creative endeavors in her career – like preparing to star in a Broadway revival of Our Town, she has taken painting classes, joined a book club, and even been practicing dance.
“I love a dance studio because every time you enter, you’re starting from the beginning,” she told the publication. “That’s a good, meditative way to approach the day.” Though her book club meets about five times a year, Holmes suggested she might be reaching out more once Suri is out of the house.
“The members of my book club are going to get annoyed hearing from me. The mother-of-one joked, adding, “I’ll be like, ‘Let’s meet once a week.'”
Holmes welcomed daughter Suri with ex Cruise in April 2006, about six months before the pair tied the knot in a lavish ceremony at an Italian castle.
The couple, who were dubbed “TomKat,” were first spotted together in April 2005. The pair divorced in June 2012, and Holmes was granted primary custody.
