Nigel Farage has opened up about what goes on behind the closed doors of the House of Lords.

The former MEP who on several occasions failed to become an elected MP in the House of Commons during five general elections and two by-elections is currently appearing on ITV’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! Farage, previously admitted that his stint would anger some but he hoped that some viewers would like him.

During the latest episode of the show which is filmed in the Australian jungle, he discussed the differences between the American President and the British Prime Minister. Racing jockey Frankie Dettori took the opportunity to grill Farage about his friendship with controversial former President, Donald Trump.

“Ask Trump to get Joe Exotic out [of prison],” he demanded. The 60-year-old is currently serving a 21-year sentence after being convicted for conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire on two counts, violation of the Lacey Act on eight accounts and Violation of the Endangered Species Act on nine accounts.

A presidential pardon is an expression of the President’s forgiveness and is usually granted when an applicant has accepted responsibility for the crime and has behaved in a good way during their incarceration.

Discussing the differences between the UK and American political system, he commented: “What out of prison? Amazing the power an American President has. That pardon is a really powerful tool. He’s pardoned a few people. All American Presidents do. Our Prime Minister doesn’t have any power like that at all.”

“They can bestow honours,” said First Dates star Fred Sirieix before Farage responded: “Honours he can give, yeah.” But Fred wasn’t finished as he said: “Being in the House of Lords, you get a paycheck every year.” This, however, appeared to irritate Farage who quipped: “Well you don’t, you get a cheque every day. You get £300 a day for turning up.”

After Frankie joked that the sum of £300 would just about cover lunch for somebody in the House of Lords, Farage explained: “I went to the House of Lords about two months ago, a guy I served with in the late 90s and early 00s in Brussels invited me to lunch. I said, ‘What’s it like here?’ He said, ‘It’s the best retirement home in the country.’

“He said, ‘I get a taxi in every morning, I do a little paperwork, sign in for the money, go for lunch in the subsidised dining room’ and it’s old fashioned English food, it’s roast, it’s really cheap. They go into the House of Lords at 2.30pm for the opening of debates or whatever it is and then p*** off home, that’s it done!”

However, Farage made a point of telling his campmates that while he was a serving Member of the European Parliament and was in his office in Brussels, he and his colleagues were given a daily spending allowance of 300 Euros which he “more than spent”. But Hollyoaks actor Nick Pickard commented in the Bush Telegraph: “You’ve also got to remember it’s his side of everything, so you’ve got to go with a balanced opinion, but it is quite interesting. He’s not telling porkies, he’s just telling his side of the story.”
